Basket Weaving

What parts/ terms make up a basket?
The basic basket is made up of a base (woven or wooden), stalves/ spokes, weavers, lashers, rims, handle, lid/ cover and a finish.

What size round reed fits in your predrilled wooden bases?
Our round or oval predrilled wooden bases are drilled for a #4 round reed to be used as spokes.

Do I dye reed before or after weaving?
Reed must be dyed before weaving in to your basket. However, we also offer already pre dyed colored reeds in flat and round. Also available is a basketry spray stain (Weavers Stain) which is applied to your basket after completion.

What is smoked reed?
Our European smoked reed is available in round, flat, flat oval in a walnut color to accent your basket with the natural. Smoked reed is put through a process with a sulpher and water bath, dried thoroughly in order to darken the reed throughout the complete strand.

What is the difference between a flat oval and a half round reed?
Flat oval reed is a pliable reed used in the weaving process; flat on one side with a slight rise on the top side. Half round reed is a chunk of round reed cut in half and used in rims and handles of a basket.

How are bases ordered on Nantucket baskets in conjunction with the molds?
We will support base manufacturing for any molds. When in doubt please fax or mail us a template of the base. With our molds, the base corresponds with the size of the mold. For example, you order a round cherry base for a 6" round mold (not a 6" base). The base for a 6" round mold is actually 3 1/2".

What are the most popular sizes of material used in Nantucket Baskets?
The most popular Nantucket weaving cane used is Superfine 2.0mm, Fine-Fine 2.25mm and Fine 2.5mm. The most popular stalve/ spoke material used is Nantucket 6mm Binder and European Cut 1/4" Flat oval reed.
